What is the difference between Medicare Part A, Part B, Part C, and Part D?
Part A (Hospital Insurance): Covers inpatient hospital care,
skilled nursing facility care, hospice, and some home health
care.
Part B (Medical Insurance): Covers doctor visits, outpatient care,
preventive services, and some home health services.
Part C (Medicare Advantage): An alternative to Original Medicare
offered by private companies, often including additional benefits
like dental, vision, and drug coverage.
Part D (Prescription Drug Coverage): Helps cover the cost of
prescription drugs.
When can I enroll in Medicare?
You can enroll during:
Initial Enrollment Period (IEP): A 7-month window around your 65th
birthday (3 months before, the month of, and 3 months after).
Annual Enrollment Period: October 15th to December 7th each year
and allows most beneficiaries to enroll into a new plan for the
following year.
Open Enrollment Period: January 1st to March 31st each year if you
have a Medicare Advantage plan.
Special Enrollment Periods: Triggered by certain life events, like
losing employer coverage.
Does Medicare cover dental, vision, or hearing services?
Original Medicare (Parts A & B) generally does not cover routine dental care, vision exams for glasses, or hearing aids. However, Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans may offer these benefits, depending on the plan.
How much does Medicare cost?
Part A: Usually free if you or your spouse paid Medicare taxes for
at least 10 years.
Part B: Standard premium is set annually (e.g., $174.70/month in
2024), though higher incomes may pay more.
Part C and Part D: Costs vary by plan and provider. These may
include premiums, deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance.
